Internet Search Engines

A large number of people use Internet search engines to assist them in locating a variety of information on the Internet.  Internet search engines have also been improving with advances in technology and do afford the avid researcher, a viable avenue for gathering research information.

The search engines listed below have been included only for information purposes only.  There is no claim being made as to the quality of the service or the ability of the program to provide the needed information.

  Alexa
Alexa's strength in addition to being a useful search engine, is the feature of providing related links and traffic rankings for web sites in its index.  This is a very useful search engine.

  AltaVista
One of the earliest search engines to come on the scene, AltaVista claims to provide "the most comprehensive search experience on the web".  In conjunction with the other available search engines, AltaVista would be an added bonus for searching the web.

  Ask.com
Formerly known as Ask Jeeves.  Still a very useful search engine.

  Gigablast
Gigablast, with index of approximately 10 billion web pages has the option of searching  in various languages.  Search results are usually returned in the language the query was made.

  Google
Google is listed as a major search engine which is constantly improving.  One is able to retrieve information on various subjects including images and documents in various formats such as PDF documents.

  HotBot
Results from HotBot are from Yahoo, Google and Teoma.

  Lycos
Started as a search engine research project, Lycos has evolved into a search engine and web portal with more of an entertainment focus.

  MSN Search
MSN search is provided by Microsoft.  In addition to the regular search functions, Microsoft has enabled searches of its own encyclopedia, Encarta.

  Teoma
Teoma has a smaller index than some of the other search engines but search results are still quite good.

Meta Search Engines

Metasearch engines have an advantage over other search engines in that they submit queries to multiple search engines at the same time.  This feature allows for the retrieval of search information from more than one general search engine simultaneously.

  Dogpile
With a very attractive search interface, Dogpile searches more that two dozen search engines simultaneously along with newsgroups, FTP sites and other major search sites.

  MetaCrawler
MetaCrawler searches major search engines and directories at the same time, just like Dogpile.  However, search results produced by MetaCrawler are organized into a single list with duplicates removed.
